I’ll admit to being slightly compulsive … the evidence being that I spent two weeks sussing out dozens of different kinds of ice cream makers.
I not only read the manufacturer’s information but read hundreds of reviews both good and bad.
The reason I want (NEED) an ice cream maker is because I am diabetic and there are virtually NO sugar-free commercial ice creams available. The few available selections are horrendously expensive and frankly … taste terrible. So I decided to go for it and make my own sugar-free ice creams.
Out of the dozens of ice cream makers that are available, here are my top three selections. Curiously enough, they are all from the Cuisinart family — a company known for quality products.
I ended up buying the 1st one on the list and after more than a month and dozens of sugar free ice cream recipes, I am happier than a clam. Hmmmm, have you ever wondered why clams are happy?
This was my top choice of the available ice cream makers. It makes 2-quarts of ice cream, frozen yogurt, gelato or sorbet.
I will confess to choosing partially on “looks.” I loved the sleek design and stainless steel exterior. One of the major factors in my choice was the 2 quart capacity. Many of the reviews on my second choice mentioned “too small.” Thought it is only 1/2 a quart larger, it appears to make a difference. .
Another important deciding feature is that this model has three speed settings: ice cream, gelato or sorbet settings. The cheaper models only have ONE setting — ice cream only. What changes is the speed of paddle rotation. (see my final choice for the BEST gelato maker)
One of the issues with this type of ice cream maker is the fact that you have to pre-freeze (8 to 12 hours) the canister. I highly suggest getting a second canister at the same time as you get your machine … then you will be able to make two batches back-to-back. The extra canister is pricey and you should factor that into your final buying decision. Here is the canister for the Ice-70 model: Cuisinart ICE-70RFB Replacement Freezer Bowl, 2 quart, Gray
This is my second choice, for the reasons outlined above.
If I was choosing an ice cream maker based on price (an AMAZING VALUE) and on functionality, this would have had me hitting the buy button. There are thousands of incredibly detailed five star reviews and if you only want to make ice cream (there is only one speed setting) this is the way to go.
Honest, if you are wondering IF you should get an ice cream maker, you can’t go wrong. It is inexpensive and functional. You will be making your own custom made sugar-free ice creams in less than 20 minutes … what could be better!
When you get to the Amazon product page, you will see a variety of colors. In addition to classic white you can get pink, aqua blue, magenta (yikes) and red… go ahead and choose something bold if you want to giggle.

Seriously consider this Ice Cream Maker if …
- you have a large family
- you don’t want to fiddle around with pre-freezing canisters (8 – 12 hours in advance)
- you seriously love gelato and sorbet
This was another top contender for me. The biggest plus for this machine is the fact that you don’t have to pre-freeze a canister … simple plug in the machine, add your ingredients and go. This means you can make batch after batch one after another, but it also means that making each batch takes a bit longer than my first two selections.
Another big plus are the two paddles, one for gelato and another for ice cream. So if you are a big time gelato fan you can’t go wrong with this selection.
If you factor the cost of additional canisters (my first two selections) it makes the higher price point of this model a lot easier to make a decision about.
