Make Your Own THM Sweet Blends

by Melanie

It is quick, easy and VERY cost effective to make your own THM sweetener blends. We're talking NO sugar, extremely low carb blends that are perfect for Diabetics because they will not affect your blood sugar levels. THM, Low Carb, No Sugar

It is quick, easy and VERY cost effective to make your own THM (Thin Healthy Mama) sweetener blends.  We’re talking NO sugar, extremely low carb blends that are perfect for Diabetics because they will not affect your blood sugar levels.

I love the THM gals, but I don’t love the prices they charge.  Basically you are paying for their THM “brand name.”   With the following recipes you can save at least 25%  … and more, depending on the size of generic bulk quantities you purchase.  When you see the recipes below you will GAG at the thought of paying so much extra for something that is so fast and easy to make.

Scroll down to the end of the page to see more about the ingredients and bulk prices.

NOTE:   I have made numerous recipes published by the THMs.  I find ALL of them way too sweet. This is probably an acquired taste because I have been working at not needing things as sweet as your average Martha or Joe may be accustomed to.    When following a THM recipe I normally start with about 1/2 to 2/3 the sweetener asked for.  Then I adjust slightly to taste.

DIY Recipe for the THM Super Sweet Blend

NOTE: Keep the quantities small.  It is easier to ensure a good mix of the ingredients that way.

Super Sweet Blend Copycat

1 cup Erythritol
1 teaspoon Pure White Stevia Extract

It is fast and easy and to me tastes exactly like THM’s blend.

Mix the two ingredients thoroughly.   I normally put this quantity in a large jar shake,  AND stir.

If I am baking,  I mix the blend ingredients right into the recipe as I go.  For example if the recipe calls for 1/4 cup of Super Sweet Blend, I’ll mix 1/4 cup of Erythritol and 1/4 teaspoon Pure White Stevia Powder directly into the dry mix.   This is difficult to do in smaller quantities!

DIY Recipes for the THM Gentle Blend

I have tested all these recipes, they all work.  My favorite recipe is the first one.  Try them in order until you find the one that BEST fits your taste profile.

The trick to a good Gentle Blend is to first mix the ingredients together with a big spoon and then buzz in a coffee grinder or blender in small quantities.  This is necessary because Xylitol normally comes in larger HARD crystals and what you are aiming at is a consistency a little finer than table sugar.

Why does Xylitol come in larger crystals?  I’m guessing this to to prevent clumping.  Which is WHY it is a good idea NOT to buzz and store large quantities of the blend unless you have an air tight container.

NOTE: Keep the quantities small.  It is easier to ensure a good mix of the ingredients that way.

DOG OWNERS:  Xylitol is toxic and can be lethal to dogs.  Best to not use it if your dog wolfs down human food.  If your dog is obedient exercise extreme caution or simply keep this out of your home.   CAT OWNERS: Xylitol is toxic to cats, but apparently they are smart enough not to eat anything made with it.  BUT if you regularly feed your cat table scraps, exercise extreme caution or  or simply keep this out of your home.

Gentle Blend  Copycat

1 cup Erythritol
1 cup Xylitol
1 teaspoon Pure White Stevia Extract
Mix thoroughly with a big spoon and then buzz in a coffee grinder, spice mill or blender. You are aiming at a powdery consistency slightly finer than table sugar.

Gentle Blend #2

1 3/4 cups Erythritol
3/4 cup Xylitol
1 teaspoon Pure White Stevia Extract

Mix thoroughly with a big spoon and then buzz in a coffee grinder or blender. You are aiming at a powdery consistency slightly finer than table sugar.

Gentle Blend #3

This blend has a lot more Xylitol and Stevia than most copycat recipes.   Try it ONLY if the others do not suit. Also be aware that Xylitol especially can cause stomach upset (gas, diarrhea) if you are not used to it.  So eat only small quantities until your digestive system adjusts.

1 1/2 cups erythritol
2 cups  xylitol
2 teaspoons Pure White Stevia Powder

Mix thoroughly with a big spoon and then buzz in a coffee grinder or blender. You are aiming at a powdery consistency slightly finer than table sugar.

MORE About Erythritol, Xylitol and Stevia

I have loads of information on each of these ingredients, including the good and the not so good. In spite of the fact that there is a bit of “not so good,”  which mostly involves a short bout of stomach adjustment … this blend is the closest in taste, cup-for-cup measurements and in its ability to mimic the browning, caramelizing and bulking abilities of sugar.

Buying in Bulk

You are actually lucky if your local grocers or big box stores carries ANY of these ingredients.   I have always found the best bulk prices to be at Amazon.   IF you find better prices, please let us all know!

Yes I get a small affiliate commission from Amazon, which pays for the time I spend on this site … so please support this site by using my links.  Thank you!!

Measurement information:

One pound of Xylitol and Erythritol is a little more than two cups.

One kilogram (kg) is slightly more than two pounds.

Guesstimate how much sweetener you might use in three or six months and order accordingly.   If you are making both the sweet blend and gentle blend … you will need slightly more Erythritol than Xylitol.    How do you guesstimate?  Remember back to when you used sugar?  If you used 10 pounds every 3 months,  you will need 6-7 pounds of Erythritol and 5 pounds of Xylitol to last you 3 months.

Here are the brands I order.  (I have two shopping carts at the end so if you need to order all of them, just scroll down)

ERYTHRITOL

This small 2+ pound packages will give you enough for testing.

Now Foods Erythritol, 2.5 Pound

This 5 pound package will last most folks three to six months.

Erythritol Granules (5lbs) by Anthony’s, Made in the USA, Non-GMO, Natural Sweetener

And here is the ultimate saver package.  Eleven pounds will likely last you a year.  IF you do a lot of baking for your whole family, then the 55 pound pack offers incredible savings.

Erythritol Powder by Bulksupplements | No-Calorie Sugar Substitute (1 kilogram)

1 kilogram is just over 2 pounds. If you look at the right hand side bar on the product page you will see a link for 5 kilograms (11 pounds) and 25 kilograms (55 pounds) *best price deal.

XYLITOL

Purchasing Xylitol

Xylitol is available in powder (usually cup-for-cup) and packets. I think the packets are a waste of money.

I specifically tried Xylo Sweet because it not only had thousands of happy customers, but loyal customers as well! AND it is a fabulous price. In my local drug stores or grocery stores the price for Xylitol is over $15 for one pound or less. If you purchase 2 x 5-pound packages of Xylosweet it costs less than $5 a pound.

Xlear Xylosweet Bag, 5-Pound

If you prefer packets … click HERE

If you use larger quantities of Xylitol, this is an even better bargain at just over $4.00 a pound.

NOW Foods Xylitol,15-Pound

Pure STEVIA Powder (Extract)

This is the bulk power I consistently purchase. It is available in 100 gram (a little less than 4 ounces), 250 gram (about 1/2 a pound) and 1 kilogram (just over 2 pounds) quantities. I find that for my individual needs a 250 gram package will last about a year. My friend Chef Joe, purchases this is 1 kilogram quantities for a family of five … they make huge quantities of their own sweetened juices and soda fountain bubbling drinks.

NOTE:  I don’t always use the blends.  Anytime I am sweetening drinks or am making recipes with lots of liquid I use Stevia.  IF you find pure Stevia to have a strange taste, it is either because you are using too much (even a drop too much makes a difference), or because of your taste profile or genetic disposition.

BulkSupplements Pure Stevia Powder (250 grams)

While you are on Amazon, check out some of the other Bulk Supplements products … I have never gone wrong with this company’s products.

If you want ORGANIC .. this company consistently gets great reviews. **NOTE I have NOT tested this brand.

Always TEST everything out before buying in large quantities.   Here is a shopping cart for about 10 pounds of sweetener.  You’ll have Stevia left over to sweeten all your drinks and juices and for your next batch.
