BEST Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder

by Chef Joe Bandler

Best electric coffee and spice grinder. This easy to use and clean grinder will grind coffee, flax seeds, spices and herbs in seconds.

I love this photo of an antique coffee grinder.  But I’m happy that the electric versions are much faster and more efficient!

Why Is Fresh Ground Coffee so Important?

Make the perfect cup of coffee with KRUPS Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder https://sugar-free-zone.com

There is nothing like a hot cup of coffee in the morning. Every professional barista will tell you that preparing a cup of coffee or espresso is a real art and a precise science. It can take years to perfect every step of the process. And this process begins with freshly ground beans.
.

.Coffee beans lose 40% of their aroma in the minutes following the grinding process. In other words, the best cup of coffee or espresso anyone can get comes from freshly ground beans.
.

Did you know there is a Gold Cup Standard for brewing coffee?

The “Golden Cup Standard” … One tried and true process that has been around since the 1950s and upheld by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) is the Golden Cup Standard. This standard provides specific guidelines based on scientific research conducted to develop a baseline for quality.  – Specialty Coffee Association of America

.
.Over the years I have tested and purchased numerous coffee grinders and spice mills.  My favorite brand for ease of use and versatility is Krups.

.
I used this unit as a heavy work horse for over 8 years before it gave up the ghost.   It is an Amazon Top Choice and I loved how easy it is to use and keep clean.

Though it is advertised as a coffee and “dry” spice grinder, I regularly chopped fresh herbs without any problems.   I was careful NOT to grind to a liquid or semi-liquid state.
It is really easy to clean with a pastry brush.  Simply brush out anything below the blade and whisk out any left over coffee, seed or nut dust.

When my Krups F203 finally gave up the ghost … I decided to try this one, because it actually states that it can be used for chopping herbs.

My Krups has  a permanent spot on my kitchen counter.
.
In the morning I start with coffee … going for a fine grind.
.
My family loves smoothies and one ingredient we always use is ground flax seeds.  Once a week I grind several batches and store the freshly ground flax seeds in a glass jar in the kitchen freezer.
.
freshly ground fax seed is perfect for making breakfast smoothies
I also regularly use the grinder for making spice mixes. If you have never ground your own spices, you are in for an amazing experience.  The aroma of freshly ground spices is unlike anything you have experienced before.  Sheer ecstasy!
.
I make my own chili spice mix, my own version of Garam Masala as well as dozens of other ethnic spice blends.
.
If your spice mix has a real punch to it (chilis) it is easy to remove any strong odors by grinding a tablespoon of dry white rice and a tablespoon of baking soda for 30 – 60 seconds.  Empty out the rice mix and wipe the inner chamber with a slightly damp cloth or paper towel.  LOL … I don’t want anything interfering with my “perfect” cup of coffee!
.
I also mince fresh herbs, garlic and fresh ginger in seconds. I often do this in larger batches.  If I am cooking up a large batch, or several dishes at the same time, I’ll probably use up a big batch of minced garlic or ginger on the same day.  If there is anything left over, I put it in a small glass jar, cover it with olive oil and store in the refrigerator for up to a week (it never lasts that long).
.
.
My wife and I are on a low-carb diet.  To stay low carb we make our own sweetener blend and use the coffee and spice grinder to buzz the sugar blend to the right consistency.
If you too are on a low carb diet, try out our  favorite Sweetener Blend Recipe.
.
This sweetener blend recipe is a combination of erythritol, xylitol (optional) and Stevia -- a perfect subsititute for sugar. Cup for cup measuring.
.
Last but not least  …   I will often break up nuts into smaller pieces.  On several occasions I have run out of almond flour and made my own … much faster than a trip to the grocery store!

Pros of the Krups Coffee and Spice Grinders

  • Requires very little counter space.
  •  Versatile: grinds coffee, spices, nuts, flax and other seeds; minces fresh herbs, garlic and ginger.
  • Fast and easy to clean … just wipe out with a slightly damp cloth or paper towel or brush out with a clean, dry pastry brush

Cons of the Krups Coffee and Spice Grinders

  • Coffee grinding purists will say that this type of grinder might heat up the coffee beans as they are being ground, thus degrading the taste.
  • You can’t make “liquid” spice pastes with these grinders. The liquid may get into the grinding unit and short the motor.

Here are my top two favorites, plus a few more grinders for comparison:
