At one point my life I was over 250 pounds. I say “over” because my scale maxed out at 250. At one point my doctor told me 280 and I have no idea if I was ever heavier than that.
I was frustrated, demoralized and a victim of yo-yo dieting.
I watched every episode of the the first year of The Biggest Loser. I didn’t DO anything other than watch. Years later when I truly started my weight loss journey because I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I did massive and I mean MASSIVE amounts of research.
In The Biggest Loser program they hardly ever talked about diet. In one of the weekly episodes they virtually TORTURED the participants by covering tables and filling glass front refrigerators with sugar rich food guaranteed to put on weight.
WTF! Made for good TV, but the ethics?
Basically the show focused on the “visual” and what was visual was the exercise components that the trainers (shame on them) forced the participants through.
So back to that first program … 1/2 males and 1/2 females. Both had boobs, but the females had bigger boobs.
The trainers (male or female) did not have boobs … and they pushed the participants to run and run and run. Run on the beach, up a mountain side, up and down bleachers, country roads and then again on a treadmill.
I remember grabbing my own boobs as I watched those poor women struggling to run down a beach with their boobs flapping and bouncing. It hurt me to even watch.
I knew from my own “try to run” experiences that …
bouncing boobs are PAINFUL.
Physical agony, mental agony,
and psychological agony.
What big woman or man wants to have others watch their boobs flopping about?
Why weren’t those women wearing the best sports bras ever? Why weren’t the men wearing compression T-shirts? The program was definitely making money and they couldn’t spend a few hundred dollars to spare those poor women pain and embarrassment?
Why? Better viewer ratings. There apparently are some guys out there who get turned on by bobbing boobs.
Totally out of the blue, this thought came to me: In the first Star Wars movie, George Lucas had Carrie Fisher BIND her boobs with gaffer tape (duct tape).
Why? I’m guessing he probably wanted Princess Leia to look younger. But maybe he is phobic about boobs, or doesn’t like to see them bounce. Now I am curious enough to rent a few of the other movies to see if Carrie had to continue to duct tape her boobs, or if she was allowed to grow up!
End of the thought interruption!
Back to The Biggest Looser. For seventeen years, they focused on EXERCISE. I have no idea how many hours the participants actually exercised for, but the show made it look like they were at it the entire day.
Here’s the thing. Exercise can make a difference in your weight, but when you are 400 pounds, it is your diet that has you losing weight. The program never ever said that. Not once.
The Biggest Loser ran for 17 years and most of the winners are now back to the weight they started at, or heavier. So while the show made gobs of money for the producers … it was a total dismal failure!
Back to bouncing boobs.
Ladies … you have to protect your boobs.
Even if you don’t find the bouncing movement to be painful, you are stretching the ligaments that support your breasts which will speed up irreversible breast sagging.
All that bouncing is also doing damage to your back, because you have to hold your body differently to compensate for all that weight that is bouncing on the front of your body.
There are two solutions, and one of them is NOT duct tape!
The first is a really good sports bra. Spend the bulk of your fitness budget on good shoes and a good bra. When you are 50+ your body will thank you for it.
The bra should fit snugly and basically smoosh your boobs into a uni-boob that doesn’t bounce when you jump up and down.
You are not going for glam … you are looking for protection and bounce reduction. BUT, with that said there are some pretty great looking sports bras available … some of them look nice enough to use without a coverup!
Here is a sturdy sports bra that not only looks nice, but has rave reviews on Amazon for doing “the job.
High-Impact Breast Support Bands
High-impact support bands go over the top of your boobs and prevents them from bouncing UP.
You can use them with your regular bra, but many women use breast support bands in IN ADDITION to a sports bra.
Are there any solutions for man boobs (gynecomastia). The good news is YES because guys can experience anything from unpleasant discomfort to pain while jogging, engaging in sports such as tennis, basketball, hockey and more.
Compression Tank Tops and Vests
Similar to many of the women’s sports bras, the idea is to flatten your chest as much as possible. No bouncing, no pain or discomfort. Underworks.com has a nice range of compression tanks and vests for men.
The company Spanx has developed a line of “shape wear” for men. The compression clothing is designed to look like a regular undershirt and so won’t be embarrassingly noticeable.
Many women and men give up their exercise program or no longer participate in their favorite sports because of the humiliation, embarrassment and pain of bouncing boobs. Try the options listed above and start living your life again!
There are a HUGE variety of Sports Bras Available. Don’t be afraid to try a few different kinds to get the best NO-BOUNCE results for YOU!
